A Pockels cell is a device that allows light to travel through an electro-optic crystal that has electrodes attached to it. It is possible to modulate the phase delay in the crystal (→ Pockels effect) by varying the electric voltage. Consequently, the Pockels cell functions as a voltage-controlled waveplate. The fundamental parts of electro-optic modulators and optical switches, such as those found in regenerative amplifiers and Q switching lasers, are called Pockels cells. They can also be employed as electric voltage sensors.
